The winner of this year's Scripps National Spelling bee is a California teen. Shrey Parikh of San Bernardino took home the trophy in last night's contest in Washington, DC after beating the runner-up in a tie-breaking showdown called a "spell-off," in which each contestant has 90 seconds to spell as many words as possible. The winning word was "bromocriptine," [[ bro-mo-crip-teen ]] which is defined as a polypeptide alkaloid. Shrey was a favorite to win, but had to battle nerves during the competition.
