A new study analyzes weather data from the last 20 years to find out where you’re most likely to get struck by lightning.
It identifies the most lightning-prone states by reviewing data from the National Lightning Safety Council and the National Weather Service, and noting every recorded lightning death in each state from 2006 to 2025.
As for lighting fatalities, Florida again led the nation in 2025, with 4. FL has led with lightening deaths almost every year since 2006. 97 lightning-related deaths confirmed in Florida during those two decades, and the state averages about 1.2 million lightning strikes each year.
Only 5 states haven't had a lightening death in 20 years. Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, New Hampshire, and Washington.
