2 adult brothers along with their father and one of the men's sons were on an 18 foot boot fishing but were unable to return to their community of Chefornak on Sunday because ice flow.
Alaska State Troopers alerted the U.S. Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon of the emergency situation.
Coast Guard crews launched a helicopter and a plane from Kodiak Island and reached the group early Sunday morning. Despite freezing temperatures, strong winds, and low visibility, the aircrew located the stranded party about 10 miles west of Chefornak. All four individuals were safely hoisted into the helicopter and transported back to the village.
Officials report that there were no injuries following the rescue. The Coast Guard says the group had multiple forms of communication, which helped crews locate them. Lieutenant Commander Alexis Chavarria-Aguilar describes the mission as one of the most challenging flights the crew had completed, citing difficult weather conditions and long-distance travel.
