Michele Hundley Smith, now 62, was last seen in December 2001 after leaving home to go Christmas shopping at K-Mart. Her daughter Amanda was just 14 at the time and had not seen her since. and has been searching for her ever since. Her younger brother, who died a couple of years ago, never stopped looking for her. Amanda tells NewsNation "I never thought she was dead. I always thought she was alive, Life is short. You live in the moment. You thank God for the moment you have.”
Authorities located Michelle last month through a database alert after years of unsuccessful searches by multiple agencies. She told investigators she left due to ongoing domestic issues and initially didn’t want contact with her family, but the mother and daughter reunited last Thursday at a court appearance related to an outstanding charge from 2001.
Amanda attended the hearing, and the two embraced, marking their first meeting in 24 years. Family members say they never stopped looking for Smith over the years and they hope she will reconnect with her other children and finally get to meet her grandchildren.
