Elderly Woman Saves Her Favorite Candy Company From Bankruptcy

A small business owner in Sudbury, Massachusetts, is helping to preserve a historic candybar after learning it might disappear. Louise Mawhinney, owner of Duck Soup gourmet market, stepped in when the New England Confectionery Company (aka NECCO) filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and its products were being sold off, including the Sky Bar, a candy first introduced in 1938 by Joseph Cangemi.

After hearing that no one had bid on the Sky Bar, Mawhinney placed a bid and became its new owner. She spent the next two years setting up a compact factory in the building next door to her store, maintaining the candy’s original four-flavor design and selecting a recipe from the 1970s to continue production.

The factory now produces about 2-million Sky Bars each year using a modern custom machine that can make thousands of bars per run. Mawhinney, now 70, continues to sell the iconic candy at her shop and says she wanted to make sure the Sky Bar wouldn’t disappear.
