Strangers Pack Veterans Funeral After Learning He Had No Family

U.S. Navy veteran Lonnie D. Wayman was laid to rest Tuesday in Middle Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Veterans Services shared a public invitation asking community members to come to the funeral to honor Wayman’s military service. The post encouraged residents to come together so the veteran could receive the farewell he deserved.

More than 200 people responded to the call and gathered for the service. A spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services describes the turnout as “absolutely amazing,” noting that they’d never seen anything like it before.

Members of the Gallatin Police Department also attended the funeral and shared a message on social media about the service. The department wrote that although Wayman had no family to claim him, community members came together to make sure he was honored with dignity and respect. Wayman was laid to rest with full military honors at the Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery.
