The Kentucky veterans organization Camp Hero is helping healthcare workers get to and from work during winter storms in Lexington. On Saturday, Camp Hero founder Rocco Besednjak spent the day driving his truck mostly to and from UK Hospital as 5.5 inches of snow fell according to Fox 56. Camp Hero’s mission is supporting wounded veterans, first responders, and medical staff during severe weather.
Rocco says he’s been giving free rides to healthcare workers during snowstorms for the past five winters. The effort was inspired by his wife, who worked in healthcare for nearly 20 years. He explains that helping workers travel safely allows them to focus on their jobs and return home to their families.
Camp Hero members have received more than 700 requests for rides during the current storm. Besednjak says that over the coming days, volunteers will try to help as many people as possible. Healthcare workers can contact Camp Hero members directly or register for rides through an online app.
