The Majority Of Americans Will Not Travel This Summer

If your kids complain about your Summer travelling let them know this is a luxury most people can't afford.

According to a new Bankrate survey, only 46% of U.S. adults are planning to travel more than 50 miles from home this summer, and the biggest thing keeping them from it? Finances.

Bankrate’s 2025 Summer Travel Survey finds that 65% of people who aren’t going on a summer getaway this year say they just can’t afford it.

  • A quarter (23%) say they’re not taking a trip because they’re just not interested in traveling right now, while 16% aren’t able to take time off from work.
  • Another 16% feel like travel is too much of a hassle, and 15% admit they’re not taking a trip because they’re worried about air travel safety.
  • And it’s not just travel, 68% of those who can’t afford to go away say life in general is too expensive right now.
  • For the 53% of U.S. adults who are planning some type of summer vacation, 10% are sticking close to home with a staycation.
  • But 24% are skipping their vacation altogether, and aren’t even taking a staycation.
  • Of course, it’s only April, so not everyone has their travel plans figured out yet. About a quarter (23%) of Americans still aren’t sure whether they’ll take a vacation this summer.
  • Some folks aren’t letting their tight budgets force them to stay home, with 29% admitting they plan to go into debt to travel this summer.
