Uber Driver Steps In To Stop Scam

An Arizona Uber driver recently helped a woman in her 90s avoid a scam after encountering her in the Village of Oak Creek, southeast of Sedona. According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, the woman had received a call from someone posing as a Wells Fargo representative who claimed her debit cards and personal information had been hacked.

The scammer instructed the woman to hand over her debit cards to a courier and not tell anyone about the situation. While waiting outside, she approached an Uber driver named Michael and asked if he was the courier. During their conversation, he learned that she’d been told to keep the matter confidential and became concerned.

Michael, who is a former police officer, immediately recognized the warning signs of a scam and told the woman not to go through with it. She followed his advice and didn’t hand over her cards or personal information, and she later expressed gratitude for his help. The sheriff’s office is using the incident to remind the public about common scam tactics, including spoofed phone numbers, urgent requests, secrecy, and fake couriers.
