According to a new report from ZipRecruiter, about one in five recent graduates regret their major.
The research includes a survey of 15-hundred graduates from the class of 2025 and 15-hundred college students set to graduate this spring.
- So, which majors did people regret most? Liberal arts, as many who studied that wish they’d pursued a scientific or quantitative field, according to ZipRecruiter.
- The fields with the highest regret from recent grads are political science, international relations and public policy. Nearly half (46.3%) of those majors aren’t satisfied with their choice, the job site finds.
- Communications, media studies and public relations majors are a close second, as 39.2% of them regret their decision.
- But it’s not just liberal arts grads having second thoughts, a third of physical science majors - those who majored in physics, chemistry or earth sciences - do too.
- Struggling to find a job is part of the reason they regret what they studied, but finding out jobs in their field pay less than expected is also driving regret.
- That’s especially true for those who studied public health or health administration, as the pay they got after landing a job was an average of 43.8% lower than expected, according to the study. Agriculture, environmental science, English, and journalism majors found pay was 30% less than they thought it would be in their post-grad job.
