Dad's Having Huge Impact As School Volunteers

What started out as a way for Khari Arnold to bond with his infant daughter has grown into a movement. The Atlanta dad started taking his daughter to the library so reading would become a regular part of their routine. A year in, Arnold posted an Instagram reel showing their library adventures and invited other fathers to join in.

That’s when it got fun! Local dads joined in by the dozens. The “Library Link-Ups.” include story time, one-on-one reading sessions between dads and their children, and “tickle time.” But there’s more than just learning and reading that are benefits.

It’s also grown to be a supportive community for dads who are engaged with their children and want them to succeed. Arnold says “One of our favorite sayings is, ‘It’s one thing to have men in your circle; it’s another thing to have men in your corner.’”

Studies have found that more than half of adults in the United States read below a sixth-grade level, and the link-ups are helping the children to read at more advanced levels. By 18 months old, Arnold’s daughter had a working vocabulary of 250 words.
