Couple Use “Maternity Madness” Bracket To Pick Baby’s Name

Parents use all kinds of sources for baby name inspiration, from books to websites to pop culture. Some future moms and dads even hire baby name consultants to get professional guidance on what to call their little one. But a couple in South Florida may be the first to let a basketball tournament decide for them.

John and Maria Ruiz started dating as teenagers and share a love of college basketball, and when they found out they were pregnant last fall, they decided to make a game out of choosing their baby’s name. The diehard fans are using the March Madness bracket to decide what their little girl will go by. They put up a huge bracket on their living room wall with the 64 teams in the NCAA tournament, and put a name option next to each school on the men’s side, pairing names they like better with teams that had a higher chance of doing well.

But the couple says they’re committed to accepting the results of their “Maternity Madness” experience. At this point, two of their favorite names have been eliminated. Their baby won’t be named Olivia, and after Duke’s loss to the Huskies yesterday, Sophia is out too. With March Madness down to the Final Four now, Baby Ruiz is destined to be either Daniella, Lucia, Andreina, or Valentina.
