Last week, Dave Treadwell, a 45-year-old world and European karate champion from England, confronted two suspected car thieves outside his home. His wife Kelly was alerted by their doorbell camera around 3 a.m. (see video here) and spotted two men near their cars. After she woke her husband, he chased the suspects down the street and caught one of them.
Treadwell, a 6th degree black belt and karate instructor, used restraint techniques to detain the man until police arrived. The suspect was arrested an outstanding warrant for another offense and took him into custody.
Dave urges others to not try to do what he did, noting that his decades of martial arts training prepared him to handle the situation safely. He stresses that public safety is best left to professionals. Despite the risk, he says he acted on instinct and hopes his intervention made a positive difference.
