Dogs Save Missing Toddler

Last Wednesday evening, Troopers from Michigan State Police’s Iron Mountain Post were called to a home near Faithorn in Menominee County close to the Wisconsin border in the Upper Peninsula. A two-year-old girl had wandered away from her family’s home with their two dogs. A multi-agency search was initiated between Michigan and Wisconsin authorities involving personnel from adjacent counties using K9s and drones.

After an exhaustive hours-long search, a citizen volunteer on a four-wheeler found the girl around midnight, about three miles from her home, sleeping with the two family dogs. "She laid down and used one of the dogs as a pillow, and the other dog laid right next to her and kept her safe," says Lieutenant Mark Giannunzio with the Michigan State Police. "It's a really remarkable story."

The girl was checked out by medical staff and found to be in good health. She was reunited with her grateful family and Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post thanked everyone involved in the search effort.
