How to be prepped for a hurricane

When it comes to life in South Carolina you have to be prepped for hurricanes. Hurricane season is June 1, till Nov 30th, but the majority hit in late August through early October.

So you need to know some certain things.

  • Know how to turn off your home's gas and water
  • Have the appropriate wrench needed and know where your shut off valves are located.
  • Bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind. This includes lawn furniture, grills, plants, and bicycles.
  • Complete a contact card for all family members with names, numbers, and email addresses.
  • ?
  • Have a plan for you to let extended family outside of your area know that you're OK after the storm if you don't have power
  • Have all prescription medications with you in case you need to leave suddenly
  • Leave your prescription medications in the labeled bottle provided by your doctor so you can get refills
  • Be sure your important documents are safely stored in waterproof containers
  • Protect documents like birth certificates, social security cards, passports, insurance documents, and deeds.
  • Have a plan for your pets
  • If you need to leave, transport your pet in a secure crate.
  • If you are evacuating to a shelter, make sure you find a pet-friendly shelter.
  • Pack plenty of food and water for your pet
  • Make sure identification tags are up to date in case your pet gets lost.
  • Have plenty of drinking water in the house. Minimum 3 days per person but 2 weeks is what's recommended
  • You should have a gallon of water per family member per day
  • Stock up on non-perishable foods. By the way the #1 food item sold days before a hurricane is strawberry frosted pop tarts. So get there early if that's what you like to snack on
  • Make sure you have a flashlight with extra batteries, a battery operated radio, and a working fire extinguisher.
  • Have a first aid kit ready to go. Include items such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, instant ice pack, adhesive tape, and scissors.
