A California mom, who goes by @Yumi_Doll on social media, explains that she got really good at spotting a “tired mom” about 10 years ago after becoming one herself, so she decided to make a change.
Her tactic is really simple - when a family comes in, she puts the high chair next to the dad instead of the mom. Yumi noticed that many times when she did this, the moms would eat more, so now she does it every time and says moms are more “relaxed and happy” when they get to eat and not have to do all the childcare alone during the meal.
"I have had instances where the dad tries to move the chair, and then that's when I say, 'I put it next to you because I thought you were the dad,'" Yumi says with mock innocence. "Mostly they laugh because it's just sort of a Jedi mind trick way of saying, 'Step up buddy! You can parent, too.'"
Yumi shared her “sneaky” serving secret in an Instagram post, where it’s gone viral with more than 850-thousand likes, and many viewers shared similar things they do in their own industries:
- "Flight attendant. 👋 I always serve mum her food first and then turn to dad and say, 'Would you like me to bring your food after mum has finished, so you can hold baby?' ☺️"
- "I work in insurance and I always put the woman’s name as the primary insured and the husband’s name second. That way if they get divorced or anything, the man has to find new coverage for himself. 💁♀️"
- "My female boss put the baby changing table in the men’s room. She makes sure to tell all the dads."
