Moving Company Offering Free Moves For These People

Meathead Movers was founded by brothers Aaron and Evan Steed, in 2015. A few years later they were moving a woman who was trying to escape an abusive relationship when as they tell CNN the husband came in. “He accused us of stealing his items. He screamed for us to put things down. A toaster oven was thrown,” Steed remembered. Police were called, and the Steed brothers realized something. “We are not domestic violence professionals”.

With that they launched the #MoveToEndDV coalition, bringing together moving companies across the country with Domestic Abuse councilors, local law enforcement and more to support survivors. The program has since inspired more than 200 businesses to pledge free services, including moving, storage, and security assistance.

Last year alone, Meathead Movers performed 106 free moves related to domestic violence, including eight emergency relocations. Participating companies work directly with domestic violence shelters, which screen requests and help make sure that survivors receive counseling and safety support during the moving process. Aaron says the work became deeply meaningful for employees and is now part of the company’s mission.

In 2020, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence took over facilitation of #MoveToEndDV, helping connect shelters and survivors with additional resources. Aaron says businesses are coming together to support people rebuilding their lives after leaving abusive situations and to show communities across the country that help is available.
