During your first few dates with someone, you want to learn all about them, including whether they’re financially stable. But if you came out and asked them, “How much money do you make?” or “What’s your net worth?” they might excuse themselves to go to the restroom and never come back. The thing is, you don’t have to be so direct to find out what you want to know.
If your goal is to understand how your date thinks about money and what their values are, these questions can reveal their financial mindset more organically.⠀
- “Where did you grow up and what was it like?” - It’s a standard getting-to-know-you question, but it reveals the environment they were raised in, their family norms and the kind of lifestyle they’re used to, without pushing them to share specifics.
- “Tell me about your family. What were they like when you were a kid?” - This will help you learn about their stability, ambition, education, status, faith, and community, which all drive financial decisions.
- “What was your first job?” - You may find out if they saved their first paychecks, spent them right away, or used them to help their family, as well as what motivated them to work.
- “Are you more of a planner or a wing-it person?” - This question can give a peek into how they handle uncertainty.
- “What’s something you’ll happily spend on and something you refuse to overpay for?” - Their answer can reveal their values on things like convenience, health, quality, experiences and savings.
- “What’s your ideal vacation?” - You’ll learn so much more than just their travel preferences.
- “When you get stressed, what do you like to do?” - With this response, you can learn how self-aware they are, as well as how they cope with stress, which affects how people spend, save and talk about money.
