For over a decade, Johnnie "Cowboy" Mayhew and his wife Monica have been encouraging fellowship among their neighbors and doing wellness checks on elderly residents in their east Cleveland apartment complex.
During the heatwave they make sure their neighbors have proper hydration and supplies and that their air conditioners are working. “I look out for them, I go to the store for them and I make sure they’re okay," Mayhew explains. And his neighbors really appreciate his visits and the way he looks out for them.
Mayhew is urging others to check up on their neighbors, too. “Make sure your neighbor is alright, if you don’t, something can seriously happen. When it gets this hot it’s very important because you can die from heat stroke.” He says if for some reason you can’t get hold of your neighbor, try to contact someone who can get in to check on them or call 911.
