Sandra Morellato didn’t think she needed to lock her bike up since she was only going into a convenience store to buy a water and she could see her bike the minute or so she would be gone. As she walked out she watched in shock as a man hopped her bike and rode right past her as she tried to grab him.
She ran after him, but he was pulling away. Sandra tells CBC. "At this point actually, the two cyclists came by and that's when I yelled at them that my bike had been stolen and I wasn’t keeping up". One of the women cyclists happened to be a recently retired police officer and she turned their leisurely ride into an adventure to catch a thief. She called her old buddies at the department and asked for help. They followed him for more than 10 miles before the man on Morellato’s bike crashed into a responding police cruiser. He was arrested and taken away by officers.
“It was incredible,” Morellato says. “When we got there, I saw them - my two heroines.” She thanked the women for their help and says she learned a valuable lesson, “Always lock your bike!”
