Before she divorced her billionaire ex-husband Jeff Bezos, not many people knew who Mackenzie Bezos (now Mackenzie Scott) was. Even though they soon discovered that she was as responsible for the megalith that Amazon has become, for many, she’s still been referred to as “Jeff Bezos’ ex wife.” No more – especially in the world of philanthropy.
We’ve previously reported on her giving during the pandemic – to the tune of $4-BILLION – but a look at the reality is more incredible than you might think. Scott has singlehandedly given 25% of ALL giving in the United States in the last year. That’s according to a report by the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.
Currently #21 on “Bloomberg Billionaires Index” (she’s #3 when it comes to the wealthiest women in the world), Scott’s focus hasn’t just been pandemic related – she’s also focused her giving on BIPOC communities and health organizations. And when it comes to handing over a check, it’s largely unrestricted. As in, she gives organizations the money – and trusts that them to manage it themselves.
