To show their appreciation for the 25,000 National Guard members who have been called to the Capitol ahead of the inauguration, a few members of Congress turned to pizza. Representatives Michael Waltz of FL and Vicky Hartzler of MO got things started by ordering 150 pies from We the Pizza in Washington, D.C. for the troops at the Capitol Visitor Center.
“We wanted to help, so we matched the order,” explains Micheline Mendelsohn, the deputy CEO for the company that owns We the Pizza. “Then we realized we weren’t even sending nearly enough so we just started donating to troops.”
She says they doubled that order and have been doing so ever since. So far, they’ve sent hundreds of pies and plan to send about 300 a day. We the Pizza also set up a way for folks to donate pies onlineto the National Guard for $12 a pie and they plan to match each order.
