Founded in 1869 by missionaries in Orangeburg SC, Claflin University has a long proud history as a historically black university. But in their 150 year history they have never received a gift like they just got.
Linda Hill was an associate professor of English at Claflin from 1974 until she died in April 2019. This week, her family announced that she was leaving $350-thousand to the school!
Claflin says this is the largest amount any current or former staff member has ever donated! The university will use the money to establish an endowment for student scholarships. They’re also going to name the writing center after Hill because she was known for her dedication to helping students with their writing skills.
"You cannot replace someone like Ms. Hill who gave Claflin 46 years of outstanding service," says Claflin President Dr. Dwaun Warmack. "Her work was a labor of love and you can tell that she really loved Claflin by this generous gift."
