Girl saves friend with technique she learned in Hunger Games

While playing with a group of friends near one of their homes in Massachusetts, 12-year-old Mackenzie George slipped and cut her leg open on a metal pump. She had a big cut, 10-inches long and three-inches wide, but she also had her friend Megan Gething there to help. And luckily, she had read “The Hunger Games” and remembered a tourniquet method from the book.

So while one friend ran home to get help and call 911, 12-year-old Gething got to work, tying a pair of shorts around George’s cut to stop the blood flow. "I figured it was a well-known method of stopping bleeding," she says.

Another friend’s father and brother returned minutes later and carried George back to their house to wait for the ambulance. She had surgery on her leg and is expected to make a full recovery.
