Some hand sanitizers contain a toxic, cancer-causing chemical. Valisure, an online pharmacy, examined 260 bottles of hand sanitizers from 168 brands, and found 17 percent contained detectable levels of benzene, a toxic chemical known to cause cancer. The CDC and NIOSH define benzene as a carcinogen, and list “inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, skin and/or eye contact” as routes of exposure. Valisure says the following hand sanitizer brands listed below were found to have the highest levels of benzene.
