Stranded Skiers Saved After Avalanche Thanks to iPhone’s Satellite SOS

After a deadly avalanche near Lake Tahoe stranded a group of six skiers, their lifeline turned out to be Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite. With cell service wiped out, the skiers used their iPhones to maintain hours‑long text communication with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, allowing rescuers to coordinate a complex response in real time.

A member of California’s Office of Emergency Services said one of his team members stayed in contact with a guide for four straight hours—something that would’ve been impossible without the satellite feature.

Available on newer iPhones and the Apple Watch Ultra 3, Emergency SOS via satellite has quietly become a critical tool in off‑grid emergencies worldwide, and this Tahoe rescue is one of its most dramatic examples yet.
