Tip Jar Is Stolen But Community Ain't Having It

After repeatedly being rejected for jobs, Michael Coyne, who lives with autism, ADHD, and bipolar disorder, opened his own coffee shop, Red, White & Brew seven years ago in Warwick, Rhode Island. After a recent expansion to a larger location, earlier this month, Coyne discovered that someone had stolen his tip jar. He was understandably upset, but according to his mom, Sheila Coyne, he was more hurt by the act than the loss itself.

Michael and his mother shared news of the incident on social media, and members of the Warwick community quickly responded with support. Customers visited the shop to donate money, and within two days, the tip jar collected about $900. Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi visited the shop to show support and local police Sergeant John Zaborski, a regular customer, donated a new tip jar with a lid and started an investigation into the theft.

Sheila says the community response has been overwhelming, with neighbors contributing in unexpected ways to support her son. Michael expressed deep gratitude for the support, saying it made him feel whole again. He plans to use some of the money to repair his car, and also hopes to find other ways to give back in the future.
