Social media is being flooded lately with people discussing their love of the holidays of the 1990's. Many are attempting to replicate those nostalgic traditions.
Here's some advice on how to accomplish that goal. To start, forget the trends you see on social media and embrace the spirit of Christmas past. Don’t overthink it, just remember what made the holiday so special to you and recreate it now. These are some of the 90s Christmas mom traditions we need to bring back this year.
- Go to the mall - Even if you don’t go shopping, go full 90s mom by popping into Bath & Body Works to smell the Christmas candles, wandering into Barnes & Noble to browse the festive books and gifts, and of course, check out the mall Santa.
- Decorate for joy, not a trend - Don’t worry about an aesthetic, use what you have, all mismatched and colorful.
- Make ornaments with your kids - Will they look crazy? Probably, but even if your kids lose interest halfway through, one day, you’ll pull these out of a box and remember the afternoon you spent with your kiddos and a hot glue gun creating them.
- Host a cookie exchange - Invite some friends over, everyone brings their favorite cookies to share, along with the recipes.
- Wear a fancy dress on Christmas Eve - Even if you’re not going to church, getting dressed up and making the kids do it too, is very 1990s Christmas.
- Make homemade treats for your neighbors - And don’t forget the kids’ piano teacher, the school crossing guard and the teenager who gets your mail when you’re out of town.
- Wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate - There used to be an unwritten rule about this and something about waiting until after you eat Thanksgiving dinner to go full Christmas feels very 90s.
- Send Christmas cards with actual messages inside - Sure, it’s easy to send a mass-produced family photo to everyone on your list, but our moms used to handwrite personal notes in every card they sent and people loved them.
