Boy Becomes His Dad's Hero

Volusia County FL Sheriff Mike Chitwood shared with Channel 12 News that 44 year old Daniel Johnson had smoked heroin before coming home last Tuesday. Shortly after entering the home he told his 8 year old son that he was dying unless the boy could help him. He had Narcan in his room and told him to go get it and spray it up his nose as he was passing out.

The boy followed did exactly that and called 911. The Sheriff says "I want to commend the bravery of this young boy who, at just eight years old, was forced into a situation no child should ever have to face. His courage undoubtedly saved his dad’s life, but it’s tragic that he has to experience such trauma at such a young age,"

Daniel recovered at the hospital and then was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail. He's been charged with child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After the scare, Sheriff Chitwood rewarded the young lifesaver with a special shopping trip to Walmart made possible through the Volusia Sheriff’s Youth Foundation and local donors. The sheriff says the boy in an unbelievable act of devotion to his father insisted on buying him a gift too because "he's not feeling well right now. And this here he's going to love"!

The boy also bought his Grandmother a gift whom he's living with till further notice.
