Just outside of Houston Liam Conroy of Jacinto City was excited to turn 8. But then he he heard about the government shutdown and how government employees still had to work but wouldn't receive their checks for their work till the government reopened. His family knew several people that were in that situation and were starting to struggle. His mother, Kim, says the idea came to him after they spoke with one of the people who said that all of their money was going to pay their mortgage and car payments so they had hoped the food bank could help them this week but it was empty.
They asked the party guests to bring non-perishable food instead of gifts for the local nonprofit, Season to Soar, their home became filled with groceries! Alex and his family prepared bags of food, gathering and packing as much food into each bag as possible, and then giving them away to about 150 neighbors in need.
Liam says he wants to give back because it’s good for the community. "This time will be over soon and the people who make it through OK will be able to help others the next time we have a situation like this".
