A new survey from Dating.com asks 1,000 singles how they really feel on Halloween and for many of them the scariest thing about October 31st isn’t witches or ghosts, it’s being lonely.
- More than three-quarters (79%) say they feel lonely on Halloween.
- Over half (59%) rate Halloween as one of the most emotionally difficult holidays of the year.
- Even more surprising? Another 57% think it’s worse than Valentine’s Day.
- Half of respondents admit to crying when they open the door to trick-or-treating families.
- But it’s not just the kids who come to the door that spark the emotions, photos of cute couples in costumes and festive family pics posted on social media are triggers, too.
- For 73% of singles, social media makes Halloween loneliness worse.
- Of course, no one wants to be pitied, so some single folks try to hide their loneliness.
- That includes 77% who admit they’ve pretended to have plans on Halloween so they didn’t seem alone and 43% have pretended to be busy to avoid having to face being lonely.
- While reaching out to a friend about how they feel may be helpful, a lot of singles don’t do it.
- Nearly two-thirds (62%) say they rarely admit how they’re feeling to the people in their lives, instead acting like everything is fine, despite feeling lonely and isolated on Halloween.
