NC Fisherman Suggest Redesigning Fishing Nets And They're Saving Turtles

Researchers at Arizona State University are using solar-powered LED lights on fishing nets to reduce sea turtle entanglement by 63 percent. Jesse Senko, who leads the team, is working with local fishermen in Mexico's Sea of Cortez to make fishing gear safer for sea turtles and other vulnerable species. The Amador brothers, local fishermen, suggested using lights on the nets, which turned out to be a breakthrough idea. The green LED lights not only protect turtles but also make it easier for fishers to retrieve and untangle their nets. The team switched to solar-powered lights, which last longer and require less maintenance than battery-powered ones. Graduate students are testing the lights along the Carolina coast by attaching them to nets and comparing the number of animals caught on lit versus unlit days. They're also using underwater cameras to study how turtles behave around the lights.
