Halloween Is Getting Downsized This Year

Bills may be eating into the Halloween candy budget this year. Over half of Americans say rising chocolate prices are changing how much they spend on Halloween candy this year. A new survey by Empower found that a third of people consider Halloween one of the costliest holidays of the year, with the average American planning to spend $296 on candy, costumes, decorations, and entertainment. Younger people plan to spend almost double that, with millennials averaging $522 and Gen Z averaging $435.

Despite the cost, 51 percent said Halloween is one of their favorite holidays, and 57 percent said memories made with friends and family are priceless. Still, half are cutting back on Halloween spending because of inflation, though 39 percent say they overspend each year. More than half believe parents today feel pressure to spend more on Halloween than past generations did.

To save money, about a quarter reuse or recycle old costumes or shop at thrift stores. A quarter of Gen Z and millennials say they’ll use AI to find the best deals on candy, costumes, or decorations and to come up with costume ideas.
