The Academy of Classical Christian Studies girls’ basketball team in Oklahoma City recently returned its division championship title after realizing it had actually lost the deciding game. After the team’s buzzer-beater win over Apache High School, head coach Brendan King reviewed game footage and discovered that the final score had been recorded incorrectly. At one point early in the game, there had been some confusion about the scoreboard, with Apache not given credit for a basket when there was a foul after the basket. Although league rules state that final game results can’t be changed, King showed the tape to his team and explained by rule the championship was there's to keep despite the error.
The players unanimously agreed that keeping the trophy would feel wrong and decided to return it. They appealed to have the title transferred to Apache High School, which the league approved. Coach King personally delivered the championship plaque to Apache High, making the gesture official.
One Apache player described the act as “really special” and Apache head coach Amy Merriweather said her team appreciated the title and also the example of honesty that came with it. She added that it gave her team hope and reminded them that “there are still good people in this world.”
