Woman With Love Of Jokes Ends Up Bringing Community Together

About five years ago, Diane Allred started posting a joke of the day on a whiteboard in front of her home in Papillion, Nebraska. She thought she might keep it up for a couple of weeks or maybe even months, but since then, the daily joke board has become a neighborhood tradition with neighbors contributing joke books, markers, and decorations to the cause.

KMTV reports that the community has embraced the project, showing appreciation with gifts and encouragement. One neighbor even gave her a children’s book they’d written titled “Olivia’s Jokes,” a story about neighbors working together that features some of Allred’s jokes. George Quaiver, who sometimes serves as guest joke writer when Allred is away, says people regularly honk or shout their approval as they pass by.

Allred says that the board has always been about spreading kindness and making people smile. She and her husband plan to keep the tradition going for as long as they can. She believes that the real impact of the joke board has been how it’s brought neighbors together and strengthened community connections.
