A cultural icon that helped shape Gen X and older Millennials is going away.
AOL is shutting down its dial-up internet service after 34 years. At one time in the late 90's early 2000's AOL was used by an estimated 25 million people. The service which connected computer modems through phone lines to the internet started rapidly losing customers as broadband service became available. In 2015 AOL had lost more than 90% of it's peak customer base and was down to an estimated two-million dial-up customers. By 2019 that number had since dropped to 265,000. They haven't given us a customer figure since then but did announce the dial up service will be discontinued on September 30th.
