When you step outside into the sweltering summer temperatures, it can feel unbearable. Fortunately, there are a few things we can do to stay cool in the extreme summer heat.
These can help you be better prepared to deal with record-high temperatures this summer:
- Make smart wardrobe choices - Start with wearing things made from 100% cotton, linen or bamboo. Steer clear of polyester blends, which trap heat and make you feel even hotter. Looser-fitting clothing lets more air move around, which keeps you cooler.
- Color choice matters, too - Lighter colors are the way to go, as they’ll stay cooler. “USA Today” tested three different colored shirts to see the difference in temperature in each in the Arizona sunshine.
- A black shirt measured 110.8-degrees
- A grey shirt was 101.8-degrees
- And a white shirt measured 99.5-degrees.
- The shirts were left outside in the sun for about an hour and the temperatures were:
- The black shirt was 150-degrees
- The grey shirt was 133-degrees
- And the white one was 124-degrees.
- Use a neck cooler - These cooling rings get stored in the freezer then worn around the neck when you brave the heat outside. They’re an alternative to those rechargeable neck fans, which just blow the warm air onto you.
- Try a cold compress gel pack - Press it against your pulse points to cool down fast. These are perfect for when you get in a hot car and are waiting for the AC to kick in.
