Instacart Using 1990's Prices

According to a new Instacart survey, 71% of Americans often reminisce about their childhood summers, and that climbs to 79% for those who were kids in the 1990s.

  • To help bring the joy and magic of 90s summers back, Instacart is rolling back prices on some classic snacks from that decade.
  • After crunching the numbers to find out what it takes to match 1999 grocery prices, they’re giving customers 47.2% off on old school summer favorites including Bagel Bites, Kool-Aid, Capri Sun, Otter Pops, Hot Pockets, Clearly Canadian and more. ⠀

A new Instacart survey reveals what made childhood summers iconic and what we love about summers now.

  • More than half (57%) say the last day of school was one of the things they looked forward to most, along with playing outside with friends (62%), staying up late (49%), beach days (43%) and family vacations (43%).
  • For those who were kids in the 90s, water toys (52%) and running through sprinklers (49%) were some of their favorite summer activities.
  • The lack of smartphones and social media (53%) is the top thing Americans find appealing about the culture of the 90s, followed by the movies (49%), the music (42%), the TV shows (40%) and the sense of simplicity (39%).
  • Nearly two-thirds (64%) want their kids or younger relatives to experience the fun summer treats they had as kids and 62% say ice cream reminds them of childhood summers.
  • As for favorite flavors, vanilla is the top choice in every state and the most-ordered flavor on Instacart, followed by chocolate and cookies & cream.
  • S’mores are another summer classic, with orders containing both graham crackers and marshmallows jumping 198% over the yearly average during the week of July 4th.
  • To bring back the magic of old school summers, 60% of parents encourage kids to play outside, as 51% say less screen time is something from their childhood summers they want their kids to experience.
