Students at Dallas F. Nicholas Sr. Elementary School in East Baltimore recently took part in a turkey pardoning event, keeping alive a tradition popularized in 1989 by President George H.W. Bush. The event, led by Baltimore City Public Schools chief executive Dr. Sonja Santelises, asks students to design an argument to get a pardon for a turkey.
WMAR-TV reports that 5th grader Jamaya Moore got Ted the turkey his pardon. “Ted has young turkeys that depend on him to help raise them. Here are some more fun facts to help show why we should save Ted: The female and the male talk differently. Also, turkeys are really large birds. Domestic turkeys are the eighth largest living bird species by weight. Let's give Ted a chance to raise his children and enjoy the rest of his days with their mother on the farm".
Dr. Santelises announced that Ted would be pardoned, acknowledging Jamaya has the raw talent to become a skilled attorney.
