The price of your millionaire dreams is going up. Lottery officials with the Mega Millions lottery have announced that tickets will cost $5 per play starting in April, up from the current price of $2. The move is part of a design to create bigger jackpots for the game, with the Mega Millions Consortium saying the “new and improved” game will offer larger starting jackpots that grow faster and better odds of winning the jackpot.
The current chance of winning the Mega Millions jackpot is about 1 in 302.6 million. To win the million dollar prize by matching 5 the odds are 1 in 12,607,306. The press release doesn't have their future odds.
It’s only the second time since 2002 when Mega Millions launched that the price of a ticket is going up. In 2017 tickets went from $1 to $2.
They say sales have been dropping until they get up near a billion dollar jackpot. In 22 years they have had a total of 6 different billion dollar winners.
