Woman spells S.O.S. with rocks to be rescued from forest fire

Mary Joanna Gomez is a traveling nurse from Mississippi and she wanted to visit Kings Canyon National Park before she left California. But after sending her daughter photos of the park and nearby Sequoia National Park, the 56-year-old missed work Friday and her family couldn’t reach her.

The National Park Service sent out search teams, dogs, and planes to find Gomez, but had no luck. Finally, on Monday, a plane spotted rocks spelling out “SOS” on the ground and were able to locate her. According to the National Park Service, she was “cold, thirsty, and hungry, but otherwise in good health” after her six days in the wilderness.
