Cops Convince Seniors To Walk The Beat With Them

The Boston Police Department launched a program called “Walk the Beat” to help seniors stay active and connected. Officers lead local seniors on city walks and sometimes organize yoga or other exercise sessions. Sergeant Geno Provenzano says the idea is to provide a safe, social environment for older residents.

The group meets every Wednesday morning and includes dozens of women and men over age 55. Police officers chat with participants, help them cross streets safely, and even give rides home to those who need it. Both Commissioner Michael Cox and Sergeant Provenzano have joined the walks, which are known for their lively and friendly atmosphere.

"It's been fabulous. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever done for myself,” says regular participant, 89-year-old Barbara. She adds that it’s helped her get out of the house and meet new people after losing many of her friends. The program is free and open to seniors in multiple neighborhoods.
