Joe and Gina Deich, were both born in NY in 1956 and became childhood friends while going to school. After graduation they never saw each other again.
They both married people and moved to other parts of the country. Later in life they found themselves single and living in Texas. They were shocked to bump into each other in 2021. As they spent more time just being friends they slowly fell in love and eventually Joe proposed. The date was set for May 3rd. The hall was booked, caterers hired, band set invitations mailed and Gina suddenly get ill. Joe is by her side everyday in the hospital. They have to reschedule their big day. Then a few weeks before it Joe experiences heart problems. Joe needed a heart pump surgery.
On their wedding day Joe woke up coughing blood. Realizing that his condition was serious, the staff at the Heart Hospital of Austin said Joe wouldn't be able to attend the wedding.
Gina was broken hearted. Would they ever get married? The staff offered to put together a wedding at Joe's bedside. Somehow at 6AM they were able to get everything together! Flowers, decorations, and an officiant, with two staff members standing in as maids of honor.
After the wedding, Joe was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal bleed and remained in the hospital for several weeks. Once he was cleared for travel, the couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Texas and later took their first trip as newlyweds in North Carolina. The couple is now sharing their story to emphasize the importance of early testing and regular doctor visits. They’re also actively raising awareness for heart health by participating in the Austin Heart and Stroke Walk, an annual event that supports the American Heart Association’s heart research and lifestyle programs.
