Middle School Girl's Class Project Earns 11 Million Grant

Eniola Shokunbi is a student at Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy in Middletown, Connecticut. As the school reopened last year there was a project assignment to help people in the future if there's a pandamic. Eniola envisioned and then led her team to develop an air filter system that helps remove cold and COVID-19 viruses from classrooms. The filter systems are made from a box fan, AC filters, duct tape and cardboard. It cost $60 to build one. They sent it for testing at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and they certified her invention removed over 99% of viruses from the air!

Her filter project got significant recognition when a state board unanimously approved $11.5-million in funding for the construction and installation of the air filter systems in other schools across the state.

Shokunbi hopes to see these air filters installed in every classroom in America, helping to make sure that students have a safe and healthy environment to learn. She stresses the importance of investing in science to help protect students and says she’s excited to see the project’s impact and how it will positively change lives. As for Eniola perhaps we should remember that name because she says she has set her sights on being President of the United States.
