Meet The Woman Who Launched The Desperate Movement

If you spend any time on LinkedIn, you’ve probably noticed an “#OpenToWork” circle around someone’s profile photo. But one job seeker has gone viral for putting her own spin on that with a new banner she created to send a strong message. Courtney Summer Myers, a graphic designer and illustrator, has gone viral for creating a “#Desperate” banner for her page on the professional networking site.

Myers was laid off last November and says she’s applied to around 700 jobs since then, but she’s gotten a less than 10% response rate. There’s been a lot of talk about that #OpenToWork banner potentially being a turn-off to potential employers, including from former Google recruiter Nolan Church, who called it the “biggest red flag” when it comes to hiring. But Myers doesn’t see it that way and she shared her views in what she calls “a little rant” on LinkedIn, which has gotten a lot of attention.

In the post, Myers writes, “I am desperate, and I don’t think that’s anything to be ashamed of.” People have taken notice, the post has more than 400-thousand reactions and has led to over 10-thousand LinkedIn connection requests and the same amount of direct messages with encouraging words and tips on job opportunities. She’s even shared another LinkedIn post with a transparent PNG version of the #Desperate banner for anyone to use. While she’s still looking for the right job, Myers now has an expansive network, which can only help in her search.
