SC Surfer Saves Woman

WBTW-TV Myrtle Beach reports that Philip Lombardo was surfing at Springmaid Pier Saturday. He says it's extra dangerous because the beach dismisses all of their lifeguards after the Summer season ends. Combine that with the ocean usually having more activity due to the hurricane activity which tends to peak in September and October. Most of those storms never make it to land but they stir the waters up good for surfing. The day after Helene rolled up the east coast flooding Charleston with storm surges and rain water the riptide was particularly strong. The day was beautiful with sunshine and temps in the upper 80's which is probably why a woman decided to go for a swim. Before too long she started screaming for help.

Philip says “Myrtle Beach is very shallow. So, you might get pulled out where it feels like you can’t touch, but the ocean floor is maybe only six to eight feet below you,” he said. “So, once you get a little bit close enough that you can touch, I noticed that with her, where she was at, I couldn’t touch yet. But once I paddled in maybe 50 feet, I could touch. So I was able to stand up and kind of pull my board with her on it back into shore.”

After the rescue the woman became very emotional, crying her thanks but also moving quickly to go home. Philip didn't even get her name! Patrons at the pier said she wasn't a regular as no one could recall ever seeing her before. They all celebrate Philip by buying him a beer and t-shirt.
