A bus full of 56 University of South Carolina students left Columbia headed to New Orleans Friday afternoon for a Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity event . WLTX reports that one of the front tires apparently blew out and the bus turned hard left into the concrete wall. That crash ejected the driver through the windshield. One student grabbed the wheel and pulled hard to straighten the wheel before the bus flipped.
10 students were sent to the hospital and amazingly the driver survived that crash and is also in the hospital.
Trooper Cal Robertson with the Mississippi Highway Patrol said "This is what we could call a large-scale event with multiple injuries. The student who grabbed the wheel saved many more injuries and probably lives".
“USC is working closely with local authorities on the scene to obtain updates on our students and to assist in whatever capacity we can,” the university said. “Our thoughts go out to the students involved in the accident and those affected by it.”
