A Chicago city bus driver named Anastasios Adamopoulos saw flames engulfing two homes early Monday morning. "I could see the flames just, truly just reaching for the heavens".
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Adamopoulos pulled his bus over when he noticed the intense blaze and without hesitation, he and a passenger named Chris Campbell rushed to the scene, banging on doors and shouting “fire” to wake everyone up. Chris says "Me and the bus driver seen the flames half a block away. We pulled over, we went and woke up everybody."
This was at 2:12 a.m. in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood. 14 people, including children, were successfully evacuated from the burning homes, thanks to the quick actions of Adamopoulos and the unnamed passenger.
While fire officials investigated the blaze, the survivors provided sat on the bus until The American Red Cross arrived to take these people to temporary shelter. The humble bus driver downplayed his heroic actions, saying "I think most people want to help others and they certainly don't want bad things happening to their neighbors. I was lucky to be in the right spot with Chris to help save some people tonight".
