Man Who Takes His Adult Autistic Son To Wave At Trucks Shocked By Gift

Alex Chesters absolutely loves to watch trucks driving down the highway. A few times a week, his father Darren takes the 27-year-old, who has autism and is a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, to an overpass so he can see the trucks drive by.

Alex’s family says he’s “obsessed with red” and gets excited when he sees a red Royal Mail truck drive by. And if they acknowledge seeing him with a beep of the horn or flash of their lights, “he absolutely loves it."

On a recent trip to the overpass they frequent over the M6 in Stafford, Darren saw something that brought him to tears. One of those Royal Mail truck drivers had zip tied a red Royal Mail toy truck to the bridge railing with a note that read: “I drive for Royal Mail and see you and your lad regularly and thought he might like his own. Have a nice day!”

The entire Chester's family was deeply touched by the caring gesture, but nobody was as excited as Alex, who beamed an infectious smile when he got his new red toy truck. Royal Mail caught wind of the story and connected the family with the driver, Richard. They’ve arranged for the family to meet Richard and for Alex to get a tour of one of their mail centers.

CWU Plans Legal Action Over Royal Mail Temporary Staff

BRISTOL, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 27: A Royal Mail lorry leaves a Royal Mail distribution centre on October 27, 2009 in Bristol, England. The Communications Workers Union (CWU) is said to be planning to launch legal action to stop the Royal Mail using temporary workers to clear the backlog of mail caused by strike action claiming the use of 30,000 agency workers breaches employment law. Talks were continuing today to try and avert further strike action planned for later this week. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images)Photo: Getty Images
