Why Hitting The Snooze Button Ruins Your Day

A new survey of 1,000 Americans who use an alarm to wake up, 61% report hitting the snooze button "more than 3 times a week".

The research show that staying in bed 10 minutes longer will throw your day off.

It’s no surprise that those asked said Mondays are ranked as the worst morning to get up, followed closely by Tuesday. People also admitted that morning is the most stressful time of the day…after we hit the snooze button. Thanks to cell phones and the variety of sounds, we also feel triggered if we hear our snooze tone from someone else’s phone.

Dr Reena Mehra, Director of Sleep Disorders Research at Cleveland Clinic explains “Much of the latter part of our sleep cycle is comprised of REM sleep, or dream sleep, which is a restorative sleep state. And so, if you’re hitting the snooze button, then you’re disrupting that REM sleep or dream sleep. The extra 10 minutes is enough for you to start slipping back into restorative sleep and then the alarm goes off again putting you into a bad mood that every time you do it makes your mood worse. It's like hitting your thumb with a hammer. Once should be enough".

So, the next time you’re tempted to hit the snooze button, think about what kind of day you want to face.
